Sea Moss FAQ: Everything you want to know!

By Amber, Supplements Buyer & Algae Enthusiast

Of all the hot new products hitting the wellness scene lately, perhaps none is more hyped than sea moss. This gooey, gelatinous wonder has been all over social media. Its users tout effects like increased libido, clearer skin, and more energy. But what's the science behind it? And why does it have so many different names?

So, what exactly is sea moss?

Simply put, sea moss is a form of red algae (a seaweed) that's been used all over the globe for centuries as a food source and health product. The nomenclature, however, can get a bit complicated -- let's get into that next.

Irish Moss? Sea Moss? Jamaican Moss? What's with all the different names?

While the terms 'Irish moss' and 'sea moss' are often used interchangeably, Irish moss generally refers to seaweed belonging to the variety of chondrus crispus. The word for this type of algae in Gaelic is 'carraigín', anglicized as 'carrageen'. It's where we get the English word 'carrageenan', a type of carbohydrate often added to improve the texture of products like ice cream, yogurt, and toothpaste. Chondrus crispus is a thick-leafed, dark purple plant that grows in the cold waters of the Northern Atlantic ocean, and is capable of surviving with minimal sunlight.

Sea moss (also called Jamaican moss or Caribbean moss) is also a type of red algae, but it belongs to the genus gracilaria or eucheuma. It's generally thinner and yellow or pale gold in color, and it lives in warmer waters (especially in the Caribbean, hence the name), southern Africa, and Asia.

A lot of confusion occurs because the two types, once prepared into gel, look similar and have almost identical health properties. To put it simply, all Irish moss is sea moss, but not all sea moss is Irish moss. If you're unsure about what exactly you're getting, just verify the species of the algae -- it's usually printed on the package.

What are the health benefits?

Sea vegetables in general are known for their high concentrations of phytonutrients. Both gracilaria and chondrus crispus contain high levels of minerals including potassium and magnesium, as well as vitamins like folate (B9) and beta carotene (a form of Vitamin A). It also contains prebiotic fiber, which may improve gut health by contributing to a healthy microbiome. Its high sulfur content may contribute to skin health, and the high levels of B vitamins may provide an energy boost.

How do I use it?

Sea moss is an incredibly versatile product -- you can add it to juice or smoothies, take it in capsule form, or even apply it topically as a refreshing skin treatment!

So, does it matter which one I take?

At the end of the day, the short answer is this: not really. Because both Irish moss and sea moss have tons of beneficial nutrients, the differences between them are going to be minimal. The key is to make sure you use sea moss that's been wild-harvested (rather than commercially grown in tanks), because tank-grown sea moss lacks many of the nutrients that make sea moss so healthy.

What kinds of sea moss do you offer at Cambridge Naturals?

We stock two brands of sea moss gel, Ocean's Promise and Herbal Vineyards. Both are Black-Owned brands; Herbal Vineyards is also Woman-Owned! We also stock capsules of dried powdered sea moss from Ocean's Promise. Ocean's Promise also offers sea moss blended with bladderwrack (another beneficial form of seaweed) and burdock root (a member of the genius Arctium used for its detoxifying benefits).

No matter your budget or lifestyle, there's sure to be a form of sea moss that works for you. Check out our full section of products online, or come in to chat with us about this amazing algae!

Blueberry An“tea”oxidant Smoothie!

By Dev, CN Manager and Antioxidant Pun Enthusiast

Professionally and personally, I’ve probably made no less than thousands of smoothies, so I’m always on the lookout for flavorful and nutritious ingredients to enhance the ones I make at home.

Enter: Millennia Tea cubes!

Millennia Tea, out of Canada, is a relatively new product for Cambridge Naturals in 2023. We're the first U.S. location to offer these delightful little squares. They're a bit different from what most people are probably expecting of green tea; they're raw, fresh green tea leaves that have been washed and frozen into cubes. That's right, fresh! Not dried tea leaves. They're wonderful, antioxidant-rich additions to smoothies / smoothie bowls, and they can also just be dropped into hot or cold water to steep as regular tea.

Today’s an“tea”oxidant smoothie recipe features Millennia tea cubes and several other antioxidant-rich friends of green tea that can be found on our store shelves or in our freezer.

Why are antioxidants important? When consciously and diversely integrated into a whole food diet, they can support the body’s defense against free radicals, which are chemical compounds that, in high levels, can damage cells and genetic material like DNA strands.

Free radicals are produced naturally as the body breaks down food for cellular energy, but they also can be found in environmental pollutants and smoke. An excessive amount of free radicals in the body may lead to higher susceptibility to chronic health issues and disease–what’s also known as “oxidative stress.”

Fortunately, our bodies have developed ways of combating free radicals on a molecular level, and we can give it a little boost of support by enhancing our diets with a diverse selection of foods high in antioxidants.

Blend until smooth, and enjoy! This recipe makes roughly 3 cups, or 24 ounces of smoothie. It’s a refreshing combination of berry and coconut flavor; summer might be behind us now, but this one's good year round!

Stuffed Southwest Sweet Potatoes

By Dev, CN Manager & Food Styling Enthusiast

Looking for a stand-out dish for a small gathering? Or even just something hearty that isn’t super time intensive for weekly meal prepping? If you’ve got an hour, look no further! This one’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser for vegetarians and anyone gluten free. It can also easily be made vegan by substituting a non-dairy cheese.

Ingredients from our shelves:

Fresh ingredients:

  • Sweet potatoes (this recipe makes 8-12, depending on potato size and desired level of stuffing)

  • 1 Bell pepper (~1 cup, diced)

  • 1 Red Onion (~1 cup, diced)

  • Avocado (1 fruit, sliced)

  • Lime juice

Rinse whole sweet potatoes and pierce them a few times each with a knife. Place them on a foil-lined baking sheet in the oven and let them bake for 45 minutes at 425 F, or until soft enough to easily re-pierce with a fork. Fortunately, this leaves quite a lot of time in the middle for the rest of prep!

Rinse the quinoa thoroughly before preparing, for around 3-4 minutes under cool water. Bring 1 cup of quinoa and 2 cups of lightly salted water to a boil together, and simmer afterwards for 15 minutes, stirring regularly. This should produce roughly 2 cups of cooked quinoa. (If you’d like even more flavorful quinoa, it can be cooked in your choice of broth.)

Dice one cup of bell peppers and one cup of red onions. Toss both in an oiled skillet with a pinch of our flavorful taco seasoning, sprinkle of crushed rainbow peppercorns, and a dash of lime juice. This is all imprecise and to taste, so use as little or as much as you’d like for desired flavor boldness.

Add the drained can of Cadia’s black beans to your skillet in addition to the 2 cups of cooked quinoa. Mix together and sautee thoroughly on the stovetop until browned, roughly 10 minutes or so over medium heat.

Once the potatoes are fully baked, remove them from the oven and split them open slightly with a knife. Spoon in and mix the quinoa, onions, peppers, black beans, and spices with the meat of the sweet potato. Add freshly grated pepperjack cheese until melted, and drizzle spicy coconut yogurt sauce on top of the potato.

To make the coconut yogurt sauce, simply mix around 1/2 cup of Cocojune's coconut yogurt with lime juice and taco seasoning, also to taste.

For an extra crunch of protein, you can throw on a small handful of Louisville Jerky’s vegan bacon bits. I also garnished my potatoes with fresh sliced avocado and even more lime juice for a final tart kick. Deliciousness awaits!

Spotlight on: Vitality Works!

By Amber, Supplements Buyer + Vitality Works Enthusiast

Hi, I'm Amber (she/they). I've worked at Cambridge Naturals for about three years now. I'm primarily a Supplements Buyer here (although I also do a lot of database work in the back office I affectionately call the Stat Cave).

At the beginning of August, my coworker Victoria (the brilliant soul behind our fabulous Bulk Herbs department) and I were afforded a very cool opportunity. We traveled to the state of New Mexico courtesy of Vitality Works, the company that makes our store-brand supplements, where we toured their production facilities in Albuquerque, visited a biodynamic farm northwest of Santa Fe, and spent several incredible days learning about the intricacies of the supplement manufacturing industry. We joined about forty other people from all areas of the health food and supplements industry - owners of small-town grocery stores from Washington State and Arkansas, co-op workers from Maryland, sales representatives from New York and Florida, and a number of Vitality Works' own team members - for a deep dive into the behind-the-scenes aspects of the industry. I can honestly say it was a time I'll never forget.

Upon arrival in New Mexico, we familiarized ourselves a bit with the local history and community. I hadn't quite realized how unusual Albuquerque is until I saw that the airport (or 'sunport', as they call it) features a specialized meditation room designed for quiet contemplation. As early as the 1920's, New Mexico has attracted eccentrics of all sorts, from writers like Jack Kerouac and DH Lawrence to musicians like Bob Dylan. They mingled with the centuries-old traditions of the local Indigenous and Latino communities, drawn by the soaring vistas and stark landscapes of the area. Hippies found their way there in the 60's, and over the decades Albuquerque became a nexus of new-age activity. Even now there's a thriving community that harmonizes the area's diverse background. In the Old Town, spheres of polished amethyst and rugged nuggets of local turquoise sit for sale beside local Catholic milagro votives; pamphlets promote guided hikes into the Sandia Mountains as well as Albuquerque's famous hot-air balloons; and green chiles (a local specialty) hang drying alongside merchandise from the television show 'Breaking Bad', which was filmed in the area. New and old bump shoulders in the city, but it rarely feels awkward. Indeed, as I came to realize over the next few days, this fusion of disparate elements is precisely what makes the herbal supplements industry fit so well here.

On our second day in New Mexico, we were treated to a tour of Vitality Works' production facilities. Led by founder Mitch Coven himself, we learned how their herbs are prepared--a process which is determined primarily by the needs of the herb itself. Certain herbs, such as echinacea, can take many years to grow, so planning must be done long in advance to ensure a good supply. Other herbs, such as Kava imported from Vanuatu in the South Pacific, are macerated in alcohol for a time to extract their beneficial qualities before being prepared into capsules or tinctures. There's a seasonality to the process as well--sometimes the facility will spend several intense days or weeks processing a particular herb to ensure they're able to capture its beneficial effects before they degrade. To further compound that, intense testing is done on every batch of product, not only to ensure the quality of the active ingredients, but also to verify the integrity of the products themselves. Defective tincture droppers are sorted out, leaky capsules eliminated. Quality control is a business that Vitality Works takes seriously. Witnessing their production system genuinely made me realize how much work goes into producing the supplements on our shelves.

The next day, we headed north on a bus to Abiquiu, not far from the Sangre de Cristo mountains and the Colorado border, to visit a biodynamic farm that supplies some of the herbs used in Vitality Works' preparations. Developed in the 1920's by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, biodynamics is a method of organic farming that treats soil fertility, plant growth, pest control, and harvesting as interrelated tasks, and views the process of farming from a holistic perspective. Amid the rows of crops -- St John's wort, dandelion, and spilanthes (to name a few) -- our group learned about the many potential pitfalls that farmers can experience. One year, the farmers watered their St John's Wort too much and it perished; another year, the local elk population ate a substantial portion of their crops. Even a well-prepared farmer can encounter obstacles.

Additionally, the climate of New Mexico is a challenging one to grow in. The region receives less than fourteen inches of rain per year (for comparison, Boston gets 43 inches yearly), so the soil is often dry, and managing to keep crops watered relies on a particular blend of innovation, traditional methods, and keen advance planning. Compounding that is the altitude -- Albuquerque itself sits a mile above sea level, so taking care of one's body, especially during outdoor work like farming, is imperative. (I had my first-ever experience with altitude sickness while there, and let me tell you, it was not fun.) Spending time at the farm truly impressed upon me the idea that farming is largely about what you can control versus what you can't.

I think the thing that stuck with me the most about our trip was the unique fusion of diverse factors that combine to make this aspect of the supplements industry so special. Custom-made 3D-printed machines process herbs grown with centuries-old irrigation methods. Careful planning and spontaneous adjustments influence every planting and harvest. High-tech and traditional, scientific and spiritual--so many contrasts that shouldn't work so well together but somehow do, combining to bring the benefits of herbal remedies to our store shelves in Cambridge.

Sometimes I feel that working amid so many sealed bottles and droppers, glass and metal and plastic, distances me a bit from the natural elements of the natural products industry. That week, holding a surprisingly damp, spongy osha root in my hands, or biting into a bitter dandelion root pulled from the ground moments before, I gained a renewed sense of the inherent wonder of the natural world.

And it is wonderful--I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how eye-wateringly gorgeous New Mexico is. Muted ochre hills dotted with sagebrush roll out beneath skies of such vivid blue it seems impossible that it's the same sky we see in Massachusetts. There were moments during our trip that I didn't even want to blink because it'd mean shutting my eyes for a second to the beauty of the place. I know now why New Mexico is called the Land of Enchantment -- for I am, perhaps always will be -- utterly enchanted by it.

Cambridge Naturals is supremely grateful to Mitch Coven and the entire Vitality Works team for this incredible opportunity!

I get so many compliments on my hair when I use this curl cream! I have very fine hair, but I have a lot of it, and I'm happiest when it looks a bit on the untamed side. These instant noodles are an elevated twist on an old staple, and there are flavor combos and heat levels to suit everyone's taste. They're all deliciously seasoned and bursting with umami flavor. You can make them happen from the "comfort" of your dorm room in a microwave, or on a stovetop. Oregon's Wild Harvest Ashwagandha Ginkgo

It is time to dread: moving day is upon us, in the city. However, there is help, and it will even help you remember where that last box is! Granted, there are other reasons this fall to take Ashwagandha Ginkgo as well: school is starting, we have to switch to colder weather garb, and there will be many more people out on the roads as it gets too cold to walk. Regulating your stress while keeping on the move is key, and that's what I like about this pair of plants!

Deborah:

Yogi Tea Soothing Caramel Bedtime w/ Minor Figures Organic Oat Milk

My day isn't complete without ending it with a mug of Yogi Tea's Soothing Caramel Bedtime. As part of my night-time ritual I brew up a mug and add a little Minor Figure's Organic Oat Milk for just the right amount of non-dairy creaminess. The tea is yummy with just the right amount of sweetness and spiciness, while the l-theanine, chamomile, and skullcap help to make me sleepy and ready to drift off!

Alexandra

Wooden Spoon Herbs Tincture - Adaptogen Balance

A mix of holy basil, ashwagandha, reishi, and goji berry; this tincture is the ideal daily stress support. I take a dropper full in the morning when I  know I have a busy day ahead of me. Wooden Spoon Herbs is also woman-owned!

Nora

Bulk Wild Cherry Bark, Pieces (Organic)

Cold infusions (steeped in cold water for at least 12 hours) made from the inner bark of wild cherry trees are warming, bitter, slightly sweet, and astringent, with an almondy flavor and scent. It's delicious on its own or when sweetened with a bit of honey, and can be helpful for chilling out hectic, spasming coughs that can arise with seasonal allergies. Calming and slightly sedative, it's a perfect cozy autumn beverage before bedtime! I like to use a sieve to strain the infusion into a mug, and then return the bark to a container and cover with fresh water to steep again - you can do this several times, and get a lot out of just a few tablespoons of bark.

Waite. The images are set in the original, muted colors as chosen by "Pixie" herself.

Essential Self Care in Hot Weather

By Amber T, Supplements Buyer + Shade Enthusiast

As I write this, it's poised to hit 88 degrees Fahrenheit in Boston today -- the hottest day of the year so far. I personally am one of those people who gets uncomfortable the moment the mercury rises above 70, so I spend a lot of time thinking about how to best care for myself during the hotter days. Here are some of my favorite tips for keeping your cool as it gets hotter outside.

Get To Know Your Body. Familiarize yourself with the symptoms of heat-related illnesses so you're able to recognize them in yourself and others. Consume more water than usual at regular intervals throughout the day, and don't wait until you're thirsty. Because your body loses salt through sweating, adding some powdered electrolytes or electrolyte drops to your water is a good way to replenish yourself. Carry a reusable water bottle everywhere you go, and refill it often. Wear loose, light-colored clothing, and take a cool shower or bath if you're able. And as tempting as an ice-cold beer might be, keep in mind that alcohol can increase dehydration in hot weather.

Use Sun Protection. If you're going to be outside, make sure to apply sunscreen to your face and body, and reapply it after swimming or heavy exertion. Even if you think you don't need sun protection (for years I thought my olive skin and near-inability to sunburn meant that I didn't need sunscreen), you should still use an SPF. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are also great additions to your hot-weather wardrobe. And even on cloudy days, there's still a risk of UV damage, so remember to wear sunscreen regardless of the weather!

Care For Your Community. Check in on elderly and/or disabled friends and neighbors, especially folks living alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control, older adults are less able to regulate their bodies' reaction to extreme temperature changes; they may also have additional medical conditions that impact their response to heat. Infants and children under the age of four also need to be monitored in hot weather to keep them safe. Consider donating bottled water to shelters or any unhoused folks in your community as well!

Make sure any pets have access to plenty of fresh water, and never leave your pet in a parked car. Even with the window open, temperatures can rise 20 degrees in 10 minutes. Learn what you can do if you see a pet left in a hot car -- this guide from the Humane Society of the United States is a great reference.

Know Your Resources. If you live somewhere without access to air conditioning, check with your town or city government about access to cooling centers -- here's the 2023 list of cooling centers in the City of Boston. Public green spaces like parks and community gardens can be a source of refuge in the summer months, as well as places like libraries and shopping centers.

Summer is a favorite time of year for many people, but if you struggle in the heat, take heart -- there are plenty of resources to keep yourself and your community cool and safe when the mercury starts to rise. Remember, our best resource is each other!

Collagen For Your Health 101

By Amber T, Supplements Buyer + Joint Health Enthusiast

Of all the supplements that have become trendy lately, perhaps none is as little-understood as collagen. Sure, it's hyped as a way to get glowing skin and luscious hair, improve your flexibility, and turn back the clock on aging, but what exactly is it? And is there any truth to the rumors surrounding this superfood?

Simply put, collagen is a form of protein responsible for making up many structures in your body including skin, bones, and ligaments. Up to 30% of the body's protein is collagen, and it's often thought of as the stuff that binds your body together. Indeed, the word comes from the Greek κόλλα (kólla), meaning 'glue'.

There are actually estimated to be an astonishing 28 different types of collagen in your body, but most of it is Types I, II, and II. Type I is mostly responsible for building and maintaining bones, skin, ligaments, and tendons; Type II maintains cartilage, and Type III takes care of muscles and blood vessels.

As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen. But habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as well as sun damage and poor nutrition, can also impact the amount and quality of the collagen we make. In recent years, people have turned to collagen supplements as a way to improve their health and appearance.

The collagen in most supplements is sourced from bovine (cow) hides as a by-product of meat production, but you'll also find marine collagen from fish (usually the scales and skin). There is unfortunately no such thing as vegan collagen. Research into producing collagen from bacteria and yeast is underway, although there is not yet a commercially-available version.

There are also supplements called collagen builders, which don't actually contain any collagen (so they're potentially safe for vegans and vegetarians) but rather consist of substances to help your body produce more collagen, such as B and C vitamins; minerals like copper and silica; and amino acids. These come in both powder and capsule

When it comes to format, the most common way to consume collagen is as a powder. These flavorless, colorless powders mix easily into your favorite beverage or smoothie, and you can also incorporate them into things like baked goods and oatmeal. For those who aren't sure if collagen powder is right for them, there's also single-serving packets to try it out. Collagen also comes in capsules, which is convenient for many people. Powdered collagen is generally unflavored, but you'll sometimes see it mixed with vanilla or matcha.

So what does the science say? Many studies are still in their early stages, but initial research looks promising. Some randomized controlled trials have found that taking collagen improved skin elasticity, improved joint mobility, and decreased joint pain. The science does agree that taking collagen internally appears to be more beneficial than using topical collagen skincare products, though.

Nutritionists are also quick to note that because it contains only some amino acids and not all of them, collagen is not a complete protein and should only be used to supplement your regular protein intake, not replace it. Whatever your reasons for taking it, collagen can be a beneficial addition to your daily supplement regime.

Staff Picks: Summertime Edition! ☀️

Sharing our absolute favorites for this season of long sunny days, ample bugs, and picnics with friends.

Rose

Alaffia Kids Bubble Bath - Lemon Lavender

While we may not associate bubble baths with summer, kids are usually coming home at the end of the day covered in dirt, sunscreen, bug spray, and probably other things that we don't want to know about. Ending the day with a bath to relax and mellow out is so nice, or is just a solid way to kill some time on those long summer days. This is truly the best bubble bath, and I have tried many. A little goes a long way to have mountains of bubbles to splash around in and it has a lovely and subtle scent. And while certainly not recommended, my kiddos have inadvertently eaten a lot of Alaffia bubbles and they seem to be doing just fine. :)

Gabi D

Indie Lee – COQ- 10 Toner

When looking for something refreshing on my face I really enjoy Indie Lee’s COQ-10 toner. Indie Lee combines aloe, chamomile, cucumber, and COQ-10 to keep the skin moist, reduce sun damage, and works with all skin types. It’s super soothing and smells like summer! I highly recommend getting our travel kit, which includes a miniature version of the toner, and keep it in your bag. Give your face a refresher in the middle of the day!

Amber

Relaxus Scalp Massage Shampoo Brush

Cool showers are my favorite way to beat the heat in the summer, and they're even better with the aid of this shampoo brush. Its long nubs gently massage your scalp, increasing blood flow and clearing away buildup, and it feels incredible when paired with a refreshing tea tree or mint shampoo (shoutout to Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat, another favorite of mine). It also has the (perhaps dubious) distinction of looking almost identical to the brush I use on my cat--maybe cats are on to something, though, because this brush feels aaah-mazing.

Allison

Rishi Tea - Blueberry Hibiscus

This blend of rooibos, hibiscus flowers, elderberries, blueberries & schisandra berries from Rishi Tea & Botanicals is a refreshing beverage for balmy summer afternoons. My favorite way to enjoy this tea is iced with a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon! Brew it hot and chill it or let it steep in your fridge overnight - cold brew isn't just for coffee!

Brenden

Badger Clear Zinc Sunscreen Cream - SPF 40 Protect Land + Sea

Summer in the city means you need sunscreen in your bag at all times.  I go for the Badger SPF 40 Sport Mineral Sunscreen with Clear Zinc. When using this you get great lasting protection, but never forgot to reapply often!  The best part about this product is the clear zinc, which leaves minimal to no white cast on the skin.  Come in to our stores, pick it up and have a great summer!

Alina

Fat and the Moon Dry Shampoo - Lavender Cocoa

This is absolutely the best dry shampoo I have ever tried, and is truly a life saver in these sweaty months! It has minimal, natural ingredients and absorbs oils so well while not leaving a funky residue. I have dark brown hair and since this has cocoa powder in it, it leaves no white/grey cast that I am used to from other dry shampoos - and it leaves your hair smelling oh so delish!

Emily

Jade Leaf Matcha - Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha

I've recently been taking a break from coffee for the sake of my stomach (sigh), and found that the next best thing to give me that necessary morning boost is a delicious matcha latte! Matcha has both naturally occurring caffeine and the amino acid L-Theanine which supports a balanced, calm energy. To make, I sift a teaspoon of Jade Leaf's organic ceremonial grade matcha into my favorite ceramic bowl, pour 3oz of 180º water, whisk it with all the 7 o'clock energy I can muster, and then pour a healthy dash of oat milk over the top. As the temperature has started to rise, I've been enjoying it over ice with a little maple syrup. Yum!

Sally

Wildly Organic - Chocolate Syrup

Made with only 2 Certified Fairtrade ingredients: Organic raw agave nectar, organic raw cacao powder!
This yummy chocolate syrup is processed without heat. It is thick, rich and actually more like chocolate fudge. Warm it up and drizzle it on ice cream - like Alec's organic Tahitian Vanilla Bean ice cream made with pasture raised milk from a Verified Regenerative farm or Jeni's Brown Butter Almond Brittle ice cream made with grass grazed milk,or sprinkle some Let's Do Organic Confetti Sprinkles on top (all these can be found in or near our Freezer Case). Bring on the Summer.

Yoto & Claire Haitian Black Castor oil

I am a huge fan of anything castor oil and my favorite one has to be Haitian castor oil. The smell is absolutely devine with an overall nutty scent with undertones of sweet goodness. The benefits of castor oil are numerous, I personally use this castor oil to deeply moisturize and soften my skin, hair and scalp. It is rich in omega's 6 & 9, ricinoleic acid, vitamin E all things that help with wound healing as well as tending to angry skin. Castor oil also is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, so it is perfect after sun care especially mixed with some aloe vera gel to further cool down any irritations. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Patagonia Provisions Lemon Caper Mackerel

PLEASE try this! Eat it with a cracker, in pasta, with rice, on a hot dog..you'll love it on everything! I look forward to making my way through all the tinned fish flavors, and fully anticipate loving all of them, but starting with this one was a SOLID choice. Patagonia Provisions works with local fisherman who fish using traditional methods, and by choosing Mackerel, you are taking pressure off some of the overfished species, like Tuna! Tinned fish for life :)

Ursa Major Spray Deodorant - Hinoki

As the weather is heating up, now is the perfect time to switch from my favorite Little Seed Farm Deodorant Cream (Blue Tansy if you're wondering...), to a spray! It's super lightweight and lasts throughout the day. It's also the perfect size to throw in your bag for a roadtrip or weekend getaway.

Ursa Major Golden Hour Recovery Cream

I love the sun. I always feels better when I spend time outside with the sun of my face but it means I need to take extra good care of my skin. So, in addition to using a clean mineral based SPF if I'm working in the garden or spending the day at the beach, Ursa Major's Golden Hour Recovery Cream is my go-to daily moisturizer to keep my skin hydrated and nourished all summer long.

Aria

Mad Hippie Sheer Tint Sun Serum

This has been my FAVORITE new product. It’s a mineral SPF that blends into the skin so soft and smooth and NOT GREASY! I repeat not greasy. I’m not a person who enjoys wearing a super heavy foundation in the hot weather; however a light coverage is much appreciated so that I can still feel my best. This is just the perfect base for the summer time. Not to mention that its vegan and cruelty free. I can’t recommend it enough!

Omsom Vietnamese Lemongrass BBQ Starter Pack (3ct Sauce + Recipe)

This is my first summer with a grill at home and I'm SO excited to use Omsom for all of my grilled proteins! I've tried several of the Omsom flavors and the Lemongrass BBQ is my current favorite. Great on chicken, shrimp, pork AND tofu, but really the possibilities are endless. It's the perfect combination of savory, tangy, and a little sweet.  I like to use half of the packet as a marinade and reserve the rest to glaze at the end. Pair it with a bowl of rice and some fresh veggies and you've got a delicious and easy meal!

Fred Soll's Resin Incense - Sweet Frankincense

This brand sells the BEST quality incense. They roll the sticks in real resin, and you see the actual pieces of frankincense on the sticks. They also burn for the longest of times, and you can snuff one out so you can use it more than once. They do require longer exposure to fire to get it to burn, compared to most traditional incense out there. I love burning incense outside in the summer time (in a holder, and not in the dirt. NEVER put an incense stick in dry dirt, it burns the dirt... don't ask how I know).

Death Valley Nail Polish - Plump Haunches

Nothing screams summer to me like freshly mowed grass on a balmy day, and now you can wear the same vibe right on your nails. It probably won't make your haunches any plumper, but it will make your fingernails look stylish and fantastic, and isn't that just as important at the end of the day?

Mad Hippie - Daily Protective SPF

Every summer morning when I was a kid, my siblings and I would line up in the living room so, one by one, my dad could cake on our 80+ SPF sunblock for the day. I hated the feeling of SPF so much that once I got older, I often neglected my sun care, even though my skin is very fair and I burn fast! In the past few years, I have really started caring more about preventing sun damage and learning what the best products are to protect my skin. It is so important to reapply your SPF especially during the summer! I love this product because, even though it is zinc oxide based, it isn't too thick in the same way other mineral SPF's are. This serum blends in so fast! I use this product in my every day morning skincare routine throughout the year, but in the summertime I start my day with something thicker, like Badger - SPF 50 Adventure Mineral Sunscreen Tin, and then use this to easily reapply throughout the day!

Portland Syrup Co - Lavender Syrup

I love drinking in summer. Hot, cold, it's all good to me, but I get tired of things if I'm  constantly pouring them down my gullet in the hotter months. Fortunately, I've found this lavender syrup to add to my toolkit, so to speak, when snazzing up drinks! No matter what you're making, be it some kind of tea, a mocktail for lunch, or a nightcap, lavender is an excellent option for adding that summer sun to your drinks. Bonus: it only takes a splash! Sure, you CAN drink straight from the bottle, and it MIGHT be delicious... but you don't have to.

Get Your Best Sleep!

By Amber T
CN Supplements Buyer and Sleep Enthusiast

Sleeping. We all do it, we all need it, and sometimes, it feels like we all have trouble with it. How can something so necessary be so difficult to obtain?

Sleep is a hugely personal, and, dare I say it, intimate experience. No two people are going to have the same sleep needs, so there's a lot of room for experimentation when it comes to what works the best for you. Unfortunately, that means that you may need to try a number of different things to get your best night's sleep. At Cambridge Naturals, we've got a wide variety of products to help you customize your perfect sleep routine.

Melatonin: A hormone that's naturally produced by the human body in response to darkness, melatonin comes in a number of different dosages such as 1mg, 3mg, 5mg, and 10mg, usually in tablets or in lozenges that you dissolve under your tongue about an hour or so before going to bed. Though it's the most commonly-used sleep supplement, initial research has shown it may be most beneficial for individuals with circadian rhythm or sleep phase disorders. It's also often taken to help mitigate the effects of jet lag.

CBD: Produced from varieties of the hemp plant that have been bred not to have any psychoactive chemical components, CBD (or cannabidiol) has become popular in recent years for its anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and mildly sedative effects. It can be found in tinctures, capsules, and gummy form, sometimes combined with other sleep aids such as melatonin or lemon balmCBN is a related chemical to CBD, formed when the chemical compounds in THC break down over time. Because it's closer in form to THC, it has a stronger sedative effect, but should not be used by individuals who are sensitive to THC.

Herbal remedies are a popular option for people looking to avoid melatonin, and they've been used by humans all over the world for thousands of years. Valerian, a pungent-smelling root in the honeysuckle family; passionflower (also called maypop), and hops are herbs that have all been found to aid with sleep. They're commonly available as tinctures, capsules, and various tea blends. The world of herbal sleep aids is a large one, and there are many different options to explore!

There are a number of things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep instead of (or in addition to) taking supplements. Avoid blue-light producing devices (such as phone screens, computers, and televisions) in the hours before bed, as studies have shown they may reduce the body's natural melatonin production, as well as causing mental stimulation that makes falling asleep harder. Create a pleasant sleeping environment with dimmed lights, darkened window shades, and pleasing aromatherapy like lavender. Make your bed a comfortable space that you look forward to relaxing in with your preferred pillows, soft sheets, and maybe even a weighted blanket! And while it might be tempting to have a nightcap before heading to bed, the dehydration caused by alcohol may actually cause you to wake up in the middle of the night later on.

Getting your best night's sleep can seem complicated at first, but it doesn't have to be. View our selection of sleep aids here, and good luck catching those sweet, sweet Zzzz's!

‘New Blog Series? Natto Problem!’

By Dev, CN Manager + Breakfast Bowl Aficionado

Working at Cambridge Naturals has given me many opportunities to hone my skills in the kitchen with delicious, all-natural ingredients! It’s been a fun challenge to use several of our amazing products in one dish, and this is the first in a series of blog posts that will be exploring some quick, simple meals sourced primarily or only from our shelves.

One of my go-to breakfast staples is relatively simple and fast to put together, and allows almost infinite options for customization: the humble rice bowl. My breakfast rice bowls always feature one of my favorite super-foods… natto

Natto is somewhat divisive in the culinary world. It has a uniquely pungent, earthy flavor, and a sticky-slimy texture. While it’s not for everyone, it is a savory and nutrient-packed addition over rice and has been a popular breakfast food in Japan for centuries. So, what is it? Soy beans fermented with Bacillus subtilis var. Natto

Natto is associated with many health benefits. It’s the original and primary source of nattokinase, an enzyme which can provide support for blood clotting and other cardiovascular issues like hypertension. It’s also the most concentrated food source for vitamin K2, which provides support for calcium regulation in bone growth and strength.

Bacillus subtilis itself is also a spore probiotic species which provides many natural benefits in terms of human gut biome diversity and maintenance. It’s also high in plant-based protein and prebiotic fiber, all of which can support a healthy and happy gastrointestinal system!

NYrture Natto, which we sell two varieties of–original, and turmeric natto for extra inflammation support–is also produced using live cultures and shipped refrigerated rather than frozen. Meaning that all of those benefits are even more potent. A single natto serving from NYrture’s natto contains 18% of your daily protein value, and 20% of your daily Iron value. NYrture is also home to the world’s only OU Kosher certified natto. Much to celebrate!

Natto is traditionally eaten with mustard, tamari sauce, and sliced green onion, but there are infinite ways to dress up a rice bowl with it! For my morning bowl today, I made use of all of the following, which can be obtained in one fun CN trip:

Everything except the fresh green onion! The prep time on this sort of rice bowl is extremely minimal: roughly 15 minutes to cook a cup of rice on the stovetop or in a rice cooker, and a few minutes more to fry up an egg in a pan with a dash of oil. I use a rice cooker at home which frees me up even more to do prep for the rest of the rice bowl at the same time. Natto and all other additions such as the pickled carrot, dulse flakes, seasoning, and Bachan’s Yuzu drizzle require no formal prep and can just be added in any amount according to your personal preference. (A single serving of natto is 3 tablespoons.) The sky is the limit; I’ve also tossed in broccoli, smoked salmon, or tinned fish (check out our amazing selection in stores!)

So in just under 20 minutes, you’ve got yourself a delicious, nutritious, hearty breakfast which is sure to start your day off right, and is surprisingly simple and fast to throw together even when you’re crunched for time.
