Celebrating Juneteenth!
At Cambridge Naturals, we are donating 5% of sales on Saturday June 19th 2021, to be split between three local, community-centered, Black-led organizations that celebrate and promote creativity, art, joy, and prosperity. These organizations are: VLA Dance, Dorchester Art Project*, and Cambridge + Somerville Black Business Network.
Founded in 2019, VLA DANCE is a performance based Contemporary Dance company Led by Victoria Lynn Awkward and based out of Roxbury's Hibernian Hall and Boston Center for the Arts. We aim to create pathways to freedom for people of all identities through contemporary dance.
Dorchester Art Project is a community-driven art space in Fields Corner. Our mission is to serve artists in Dorchester and Greater Boston by providing affordable studio, performance, storefront and community gathering space. We prioritize systematically undervalued communities, including BIPOC, ALAANA+, LGBTQIA+, emerging and experimental artists, as well as artists born and/or raised in Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan. The Cambridge-Somerville Black Business Network, facilitated by Nicola Williams of The Williams Agency and sponsored by the Sustainable Business Network of MA (SBN) and Cambridge Local First (CLF), brings together Black entrepreneurs and identifies specific programs that can be developed or adopted to help ensure these businesses survive the pandemic and thrive moving forward. This new initiative will convene and work with Black-owned businesses based in Cambridge and Somerville that are in at least one of these phases: 1) Start-Up 2) Expansion 3) Recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic.
About Juneteenth: On June 19th, 1865, the last enslaved African Americans were finally informed of their liberation in Texas, a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was decreed. Juneteenth is celebrated in the Black community and in family gatherings, and Massachusetts has finally declared Juneteenth a state holiday. Juneteenth could rightfully be considered our nation's true Independence Day!

Tis the season of outdoor picnics and (finally) small social gatherings! I'm a little rusty at preparing big, extravagant meals for friends (and who wants to be standing over a hot stove for hours) so I love quick fixes like a snack platter, complete with my favorite smoked mussels from Patagonia Provisions. These delicious, sustainable morsels are perfect atop a salty cracker, perhaps with a little dijon mustard or hot sauce. I'll admit, I have not been a robust coffee drinker throughout most of my life. Soon becoming the new Grocery Lead for Cambridge Naturals, I have felt determined to dive into our curated selection of wonderfully sourced and locally owned coffee brands, and I am finally feeling the magic! One of our newest lines of locally owned + roasted coffee that we are proud to carry is Tiny Arms Coffee Roasters - located in Lowell MA! I've used my french press thus far, but they note that it is well enjoyed as pour over or espresso. The warm cozy weather is finally here and if you're an outdoorsy - adventurous person like me would know that exposing your face skin for hours and hours to the sunlight could affect that gorgeous glowing skin. For this precise reason, I'm sharing a fabulous DIY facemask. Of course you could thank me later! You only need to mix: ground Star Anise (powder form, you could use a coffee grinder), one organic yolk or organic plant based yogurt, and a tsp of organic grapeseed oil. Leave it for 25 minutes. Remove it gently with a warm piece of cloth. Star Anise - Skin health: this herb can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles, boost skin elasticity, and cover-up old scars and blemishes to keep your skin looking young and vibrant. Star Anise is actually the hard pericarp of the fruit of the star anise tree. The name anise is a combination of its shape and its similarity in flavor to aniseed. It contains a high level of antioxidants, a significant amount of iron, and smaller amounts of vitamin C, calcium, potassium and magnesium.

It Feels Good To Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity
This book is a wonderful way to introduce readers of all ages to the concept of gender identity. The art is beautiful in both color and style, and the writing is thoughtful and welcoming. As a nonbinary reader, this book made me feel joyfully seen, and the central message that resonated with me (and I expect will resonate with other readers) was encapsulated in the title - it feels truly good to be yourself.

I only drink smoothies during the warmer months, when our bodies can tolerate the cold. Originally I was hesitant to try this, as I thought it would be super fruity (the packaging screams berries to me) BUT it tastes like cake. Sprout Living Protein Powders are one of the cleanest and tastiest protein powders we stock. Polar Plunge: Cambridge Naturals Edition
Last week, CN hosted our first in-person event in well over a year. Nearly 30 of us jumped in the chilly waters of Walden Pond in Concord, MA for an early morning swim and then we all shivered in the morning sun while we sipped some delicious Four Sigmatic coffee.
It was a simple event, free, and we kept our masks on while out of the water. But the feeling of being in community again was something many of us haven't felt in months. That positive, energetic buzz that we feel during a fun event or gathering was in the air. Sometimes it feels hard to have "fun" during something like a global pandemic- a year of grief and loss and unknown.
Thanks to everyone who showed up and made a Thursday morning at 7 AM feel extra special. It's a vulnerable thing to jump in the water with a bunch of strangers, and we feel so grateful that folks were willing to take a chance! We are excited for future events, morning swims and otherwise, anyone else?! 🌞

Now that it’s bright and sunny out at least some of the time I’ve been making sure to wear this facial sunscreen. (Year round use is obviously recommended, but If I’m being honest I’ll admit that I only ever think to use it when the sun is out). As a pale person who actually had prescription sunscreen as a child, I know my way around this stuff (yes. I extra should use this year round and fully expect to regret not doing so someday). I like this one because it’s SPF 32 and doesn’t feel greasy or gross when I put it on my face. (Please don’t stage a wear SPF on your face all the time intervention for me. Writing this has already convinced me to *try* and do so).

This Monday January 25th to Friday February 5th, we’ll be temporarily closing for in-store shopping (while still open for curbside pick-up and delivery!) We’re doing this for a few reasons:
We have numerous important ‘housekeeping’ projects to complete, that have been too challenging to do while we’re maintaining a constant six-foot distance from our customers.
We’re working harder than ever to make sure our Online Shop provides an even better customer experience.
After an extraordinarily complex year, our team is deeply feeling the need for a ‘reset’, and an eagerness to head into spring feeling more refreshed and recharged. Having space to move around the store and tackle projects in a focused way will be a huge help!
We’re working with a smaller team than usual - and hoping to hire soon - but need to take our time setting up better systems before we do so.
To be perfectly honest, we are very nervous about doing this, even though we know it’s the ‘right thing to do’. Financially, it is almost guaranteed to be a net loss, and so we’re choosing to look at it as an important investment - in our team, in our stores, and in our greater community.
And, to make this time successful, we need your help. By placing an online order for curbside pick-up or local delivery. By placing an order for one of our special curated gift boxes, and having us ship it to your friend or loved one (or yourself!). By sharing your love of Cambridge Naturals on social media with friends and co-workers. By writing us a review on Google or Yelp. And, by popular customer request, buy a ‘cup of coffee’ for our team (100% of those tips are pooled for staff drinks, snacks and other fun things).

It’s an understatement to say that we’re extremely grateful to have our doors open and to be able to serve you, our community.
It’s only early October, but already the leaves are turning and we’re starting to stock up with beautiful items for holiday gift-giving. Every year, our numbers swell as people seek out fair trade, handmade goods, coffee and tea, chocolates, candles, wooly hats and more, to give as gifts to their loved ones - not to mention, supplements to help support your immune system throughout cold and flu season!
This significant holiday season boost allows us to pay our bills, and to provide for our hard-working team by paying a living wage, by covering 100% of medical and dental insurance premiums, by providing generous PTO, along with other perks and benefits. We also LOVE to pay our taxes (!) and are proud that our business’s tax dollars help fund critical local infrastructure like roads, bridges, public health, and schools.
This year, we’re anticipating that holiday shopping will look a lot different. Our sales have gradually grown to almost-healthy levels as we’ve opened to the public - but we can’t pack our stores with customers, and we’re aware that many people may not want to stand in line in the cold in December, waiting to get in.
